VIOLENT BEAUTY
Staring into the untaken
air.
Drowning in the indiscriminate
sounds of a drinking coffee shop. Grinding
rich
beans, unspoken dreams, awkward
dates,
empty chairs, thick
books,
and loud plates into one
painful cup of perfect song. Thinking
too
hard to sit easy. Cornered by drifting
fragments
of anonymous conversations. Holding
an inky pen in one hand and ponds of eager
tears in both eyes. Yet somehow buried
underneath
the melancholy murmurs of a mellow
saxophone melody seems fitting for this new
me—Now
so attuned to mystery,
blanks,
isolation, and the Violent
Beauty of improvisation.

| Jessica Whelan has been writing outside of school since she was twelve. She likes to dabble in everything, but mainly sticks to short stories and poems, tending towards the darker or realistic side of fiction and poetry. Music is a big part of her and one of her greatest inspirations and tools in writing.
CAR RADIO Either embrace the silence or blare your music. There is no balance of background noise and melody; only extremes of frequencies fighting for better position of the possession of your apathy to reanimate your synapses, or let you sink back into the muddied waters that your day has left you fried in. Creating ever present friction in your psyche, you live and die by notes for your soundtrack. You’re living in sound through these vibrationsCopyright © Jessica Whelan. All Rights Reserved.

THE RHYTHM OF YOU
There’s a fire that burns within
It’s looking for a way to begin
The journey of your soul…a yearning to be whole
Take a chance, see how you dance
To the rhythm of you
The rhythm of you is magical
You are a natural at being you
Don’t add any more to you
You’re the key to your dreams
There’s a purpose for you and me
It’s waiting for us to see
A beauty to behold…a message to unfold
Dare to dream, see what it means
To be the rhythm of you
The rhythm of you is magical
You are a natural at being you
Don’t add any more to you
You’re the key to your dreams
As you sing to your own song
People hear it and sing along
No longer a one man band
You’re part of a bigger plan
Spread your wings, forever sing
To the rhythm of you
